COURT CONVICTS FORMER FEDERAL LEGISLATOR, CHUMA NZERIBE

A High Court  of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in  Maitama has  convicted a former member of the House of Representatives, Chuma Nzeribe.

Justice Yusuf Halilu gave the verdict  this Monday in Abuja.

The former  member was dragged before the court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a four-count criminal charge bordering on false pretence, forgery and using forged document as genuine and cheating by impersonation.

The former federal lawmaker was alleged to have been in possession of document containing false pretence  in 2013 in Abuja.

Nzeribe, a former People’s Democratic Party, PDP governorship aspirant in Anambra State pleaded not guilty to the four counts

Delivering his  judgment, Justice Yusuf Halilu held that the prosecution was able to prove its case against Nzeribe beyond  reasonable doubt.

While submitting that the counts  against the convict were intertwined, the judge convicted the defendant on all the four-counts charge.

Having found the former federal lawmaker guilty, Justice Halilu deferred  sentencing of the convict to a time that either the Inspector-General of Police or the EFCC arrests Nzeribe and brings him to court to be sentenced appropriately.
